Heya this is kinda of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!

I'm afraid I can't offer any salient thoughts as I rarely follow the traditional media nowadays - new (or social) media on the hand is highly complimentary and empowering as it enables the user to pull from many sources rather than one.

Love the digital breadcrumb following brought you to our Vistage sessions - we've been working with the UK guys for a while and now are having fun as a speaker :-)

DK,

Great comment! What do you think about the balkanization of media...is that something that you see happening in Britain? Here in the States it has become very commonplace for people to watch only Fox News or listen to Rush Limbaugh (media on the right side of the political spectrum) or Olberman (just recently of MSNBC, maybe going to CNN...definitely leaning to the left side). Of course, people have always had these choices and political extremes have always found a way to be heard...just wondering if the propensity to do this has increased with the new "wherever, whenever, whatever" (quoted from your video) attitude they bring to media consumption today? BTW, I kept digging and found a recent Vistage video interview of you...which I got a big kick out of because I've been a Vistage member for over five years now.

Great minds think alike - coined the phrase over 5 years ago and launched a business around it as well :-)

Originally I was focussed on young people as the leaders in this 'media snacking' new media environment - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mldqfN7XCOk - now it's EVERYONE!

You last exploration on whether this 'self-serve' media culture is actually bad for you - well, if you snack on crap I would say yes. If however you're digesting a balance diet and open to new things then no... the metaphor can extend - the trick is being self-aware and also be open to explore that maybe all the mass media consumption over the years probably haven't been a positive ;-)

Keep snacking...

She didn't mention any publication, but I feel like she was inviting agencies, or their contractors, to contact her directly for more guidance. What I liked about her presentation is that it wasn't focused on restrictions, like, "Here's what you can't do." Instead it was about what you CAN do. The message was more like, "We've figured out the rules and legalities, so you can focus on creating and connecting."

Chris,

Great stuff! Sounds like Federal folks are finally getting serious about using the very powerful two-way communication tools that are the reason why so many people enjoy using social media networks. I'd like to hear more about some of the rules and regs concerning use, posting, etc. I know that some time ago the EPA posted a great guide in the form of a one-sheet poster called "Representing EPA Online Using Social Media." Do you know if they have anything similar for YouTube and the use of video?

Hi Sam - thanks and good point. Personally, I think that Apple should support Flash and that the multimedia industry as a whole should move toward unified codecs. In video there is an increasing amount of different codecs available to clients and it's starting to have an adverse effect on production. Clients want to get started editing right away but get frustrated when we spend a day conforming the different media to a common format. I hope this is not the fate of developers like you and your users with regards to Flash vs. HTML 5 but I think that ship has sailed.
