Videos, Citizen's Guide, Evaluation Tools, and Manual
The Challenge
When Army training ranges are closed and turned over to the public, some areas may be unsafe for public use. In order to protect the public, the US Army Environmental Center (AEC) recognized that they needed to assess and communicate risks to citizens so they could safely use the former training ranges.
The Solution
Working closely with the AEC, Mind & Media:
- Identified and assessed the diverse needs and communication capabilities of both the Army and the public
- Developed a series of tools to reach both the Army and the public regarding environmental and safety issues on former training ranges
To create the campaign, our strategy/writing team:
- Revised the Range Rule Risk Methodology Manual to make this important tool easier to understand and use
- Created a corresponding series of 100 worksheets to help evaluate specific risks on former ranges
- Authored a Citizen’s Guide to help the public understand the Army’s decision- making process
- Researched, wrote, and produced two award-winning 15-minute videos that informed public decision makers about the safe use of former ranges
The Results
Since Mind & Media developed this risk communication campaign, Army representatives across the nation have been trained to assess and communicate risks to the public, and the public has been able to safely reap the environmental benefits of these former military training lands.
